Memory Sticks

Nowadays, they are rarely used. Previously used mainly in Sony and Ericsson devices. At the moment, microSD cards with appropriate Memory Stick adapters are most commonly used.

Types of Memory Sticks:

• The Memory Stick PRO features increased data transfer speeds and higher storage capacity.
• Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo are versions of memory cards in which the size of the card has been halved.
• The Memory Stick Micro, also called the M2, is a miniature version of the Memory Stick – almost four times smaller than the standard one.

Card capacities

Standard/Duo:

• 4 MB, 8 MB, 16 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB
• double-sided Standard card with 128 MB capacity on each side (rare)
• maximum theoretical size: 256 MB

PRO/PRO Duo:

• 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB
Maximum size available in trade:
• PRO: 4 GB
• PRO Duo: 16 GB
• PRO-HG Duo: 32 GB

Micro (M2):

• 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB
• maximum theoretical size: 32 GB

Data transfer speed

Standard:

• maximum write speed: 14.4 MB/s (1.8 MB/s)
• maximum read speed: 19.6 Mbps (2.5 MB/s)

PRO/PRO Duo:

• Transfer Rate: 160 Mbps (20 MB/s)
• minimum write speed: 15 Mb/s
• maximum write speed: 80 Mb/s (High Speed PRO Duo)

Micro (M2):

• Transfer Rate: 160 Mbps (20 MB/s)

Adapter

The Memory Stick Duo adapter allows you to use Memory Stick Duo cards in devices that support Memory Stick (Standard). The adapter allows you to use the new MS PRO, MS Duo and MS PRO Duo cards in devices that only support standard Memory Sticks.
The new Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo cards come with an Adapter that allows you to use Duo cards (Short) with devices that are ready for Memory Stick (Long). Similarly, there are two adapters for M2 cards, one for the Duo format and the other for the Memory Stick.
Please note that adapters are only used to fit the physical card to the device. They do not guarantee that the device in the old Memory Stick format will support the new cards. This is due to the fact that old devices (and these mainly use "long cards") often have limitations as to maximum capacity and speed.
